How to Prepare Your Kids for Photo Day (Without the Stress)
Worried about how your kids will behave during your photo session? You’re not alone. The good news is this: your kids don’t need to be perfectly behaved for beautiful photos. A little preparation—and a lot of grace—go a long way.
Here’s how to help photo day feel calm and enjoyable for everyone.
1. KEEP THE CONVERSATION POSITIVE
How you talk about the session matters. Avoid pressure-filled phrases like “you have to smile” or “please behave.”Instead, let kids know you’ll be playing, snuggling, and spending time together while someone takes photos.
This goes for parents too—especially dads. Kids often take cues from dad’s energy, so when he’s relaxed, joking, and fully present, they follow right along. When the session feels fun and low-pressure for everyone, kids relax and real moments unfold.
2. Prioritize Comfort
Outfits should look great and feel good. Let kids try everything on ahead of time, avoid itchy fabrics or tight shoes, and aim for comfort first. Comfortable kids = happier photos.
3. Meet Basic Needs
Schedule around naps if you can, feed kids beforehand, and bring water or a simple snack. No one does their best when they’re hungry or overtired—and that includes adults.
4.Let Go of Expectations
Kids are allowed to be kids. Some will be shy, some energetic, some need time to warm up—and that’s all okay. I plan sessions with flexibility and patience so real moments can unfold naturally.
5.Trust the Process
Many parents leave sessions unsure how it went, only to be surprised by the final gallery. The magic often happens in the in-between moments—the giggles, the snuggles, the chaos that turns into connection. Trust me... I've got you!
